Classical Pianist Iyad Sughayer Strengthens Cultural Ties Through Music Education from Amman to Ramallah

Iyad Sughayer, a classical pianist originally from Amman, has recently returned from a significant week-long visit to Palestine, where he performed in both Ramallah and Bethlehem, marking his first trip since 2011. He conducted workshops at the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music, expressing that the experience was transformative and emotionally charged. Sughayer noted, “It wasn’t just another concert. It wasn’t even just about music. It was humbling, emotional, and eye-opening. And honestly, it was hard.”

Early Life and Musical Journey

Leaving Amman at the age of 14, Sughayer moved to Manchester, where he felt an immediate sense of opportunity in the realm of classical music, which was more structured and well-funded in the UK. Reflecting on his past, he remarked, “At the time, I was delighted. Boarding school in Manchester, it was all very exciting. But now, I look back and think: ‘God, I was so young’.” This pivotal decision reshaped his future, leading to a career that now spans Europe, America, and the Middle East.

At 31, Sughayer’s performances have garnered praise at various international festivals and orchestras, with a repertoire that includes works by notable Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian. Yet, beyond the accolades and public performances, he harbors a quieter mission: to connect the cultural worlds he departed from and the one he has established.

Mission During the Pandemic

The global pause caused by the pandemic provided Sughayer with a critical moment for introspection on his role within the music community and how he could contribute to it. He articulated a conviction that “no child should have to leave their country to pursue music,” citing his own privilege in being able to do so. This reflection spurred him to action.

In response, Sughayer opened a music school in Amman, located in the very institution he once attended. The school now serves students aged four to eighteen and is managed remotely, with a team of dedicated educators assisting in its operations. He takes particular joy in observing the personal growth of students, such as shy children blossoming into confident performers. Sughayer emphasized, “I’m not trying to make performers; I want to create better humans who carry music with them, whatever they do.”

The Emotional Resonance of Classical Music

In discussing the deeper implications of music education, Sughayer pointed out the emotional weight of classical music and its capacity to nurture sensitivity among students. He explained that the aim of his school extends beyond musical competence: “We’re trying to offer a kind of literacy. A way of moving through the world with more attunement. Whether they become musicians, lawyers, or doctors—music shapes how you listen.”

With a mission focused on accessibility and emotional development, Sughayer stands as a bridge between cultures, fostering a new generation of musicians who can appreciate and contribute to the rich tapestry of music within their home countries.
