Ras Al Khaimah: Explore UAE’s Historic Gems and Adventure in 2026

Ras Al Khaimah, a northern emirate in the United Arab Emirates, offers a captivating blend of natural beauty and rich history. With stunning landscapes, including the highest peak in the UAE, and historical sites dating back millennia, the emirate serves as an ideal destination for both spontaneous weekend getaways and planned historical explorations.

Jebel Jais

As the highest peak in the United Arab Emirates, Jebel Jais is a prominent feature of Ras Al Khaimah. Situated in the Hajar mountain range, this serene location boasts a striking landscape, sculpted by geological processes over thousands of years. Besides its tranquility, Jebel Jais is renowned for adventure sports, including the world’s longest zipline, which spans 2.83 kilometers and reaches a height of 1,680 meters above sea level. The best time to visit is during the cooler months, offering pleasant temperatures and a chance to witness rare wildflowers such as Eremobium aegyptiacum and Silene villosa bloom following rare rains. For those seeking to avoid crowds, summer visits are also a viable option. For more information, visit Jebel Jais.

Dhayah Fort

Dhayah Fort, a significant historical landmark, dates back to the Late Bronze Age (approximately 1600 to 1300 BC). Built upon ancient foundations, it remains one of the few surviving hill forts in the UAE. Visitors can ascend 239 zigzagging steps to experience a panoramic view of the surrounding palm gardens and coastline, flanked by mountainous terrain. At the base of the 70-meter-high hill lie 12 Wadi Suq tombs, dating from 2000 to 1300 BC, with four excavated to reveal ancient funerary structures from Southeast Arabia. For further details, explore Dhayah Fort.

Al Jazeera Al Hamra

Al Jazeera Al Hamra highlights the pre-oil era, serving as the last surviving pearling village in the Gulf region. This open-air museum encapsulates centuries of cultural history, featuring traditional architecture and historical town layouts. Visitors can explore coral stone houses, wind towers, and historic mosques, all reflecting life before the oil boom. Notably, it is located on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List. To fully experience its heritage, early visits and guided tours are recommended for a deeper understanding of the village’s history. For more insights, refer to Al Jazeera Al Hamra.

Suwaidi Pearl Farm

Ras Al Khaimah Suwaidi Farm

Recognized for its vibrant pearling history, dating back to the 12th century, Ras Al Khaimah’s Suwaidi Pearl Farm facilitates a unique experience at an operational pearl farm. The tour begins at Al Rams Corniche and takes visitors through mangroves and wetlands, providing scenic vistas. Guests learn traditional pearl-diving techniques and can participate in oyster-opening on a floating facility powered by solar energy and dedicated to preserving marine ecology. Tours are conducted on a specific schedule, so checking in advance is advisable. For further details, see Suwaidi Pearl Farm.

National Museum of Ras Al Khaimah

The National Museum of Ras Al Khaimah, established in the mid-1970s and housed within the renovated Ras Al Khaimah Fort, is one of the UAE’s first museums, featuring an extensive collection of archaeological and ethnological artifacts. The late H.H. Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammed Al Qasimi initiated the museum project with a vision to provide a cultural and historical backdrop of the Emirates. Recently, the museum revamped its exhibits, including the Madbasa galleries, enhanced Archaeology galleries, and exhibits on weaponry. Visitors are encouraged not to miss this key cultural institution when planning their visit. More information can be found at National Museum of Ras Al Khaimah.

The historic site of Falayah comprises three main structures: a mosque located to the west, a central stone tower, and living quarters to the east. Known as the hareem, these quarters include several rooms, a stable, and a majlis, all connected by a mud-brick tower likely serving as a family entrance. The prominent stone tower at the center offers protection to a public courtyard, and its upper-floor reception room is believed to be the site of the significant 1820 peace treaty signing. Additionally, the mosque, used by the Al Qasimi family for prayers, features a naturally ventilated prayer room and exemplifies early examples of regional minaret architecture, remaining one of the few traditional mosques left in the UAE. More about this site can be learned from Falayah.
