Under the Same Sky: UAE Exhibition Showcases 20 Artists Redefining Modern Identity
The Rizq Art Initiative (RAi) has launched a compelling new exhibition titled Under the Same Sky, exploring themes of convergence in the contemporary art scene of the United Arab Emirates. Conceptualized by Chief Curator Meena Vari, this exhibition underscores the dynamic interactions among artists from varied backgrounds in an ever-evolving urban landscape. The exhibition invites viewers to reflect on how the continued arrival and departure within the UAE contributes to a rich tapestry of artistic output.
A Diverse Artistic Collaboration
Under the Same Sky reflects a collaborative effort among 20 talented artists, blending Emirati creatives with international practitioners who now call the UAE home. This integration is crucial for understanding the shared experiences that shape their work. The exhibition seeks to avoid a singular narrative, allowing each artist to respond uniquely to personal prompts inspired by their local surroundings, whether through daily gestures or significant geographical elements.
Exploring Local Influences
Participating artists draw on their personal connections to the local landscape. Emirati artist Maitha Al Omaira utilizes cyanotypes to encapsulate the resilience and movement of the ghaf tree, a significant symbol of Emirati culture. In contrast, Karine Roche employs geometric weaving techniques to create artworks that map both the architecture and flora, specifically the flame tree flowers, of Abu Dhabi.

Artists utilize textiles, photography, and mixed media to reflect the constant movement within society while being conscious of their own cultural and ancestral lineages. This interactive approach creates a dialogue between experience and art, encouraging introspection among viewers.

Modern Identity Through Collective Memory
The exhibition serves as a living testament to the complexities of modern identity within the UAE. Shafeena Yusuff Ali, Founder and Executive Director of RAi, emphasized that the event highlights the UAE’s unique ability to embrace multiple histories, languages, and recollections under a shared sky. This capacity enriches the sense of belonging felt by various communities.
The diverse roster of artists exhibited in Under the Same Sky allows the gallery to present numerous perspectives on life in the UAE, showcasing everyday realities interwoven with moments of quiet significance.
Continuing Until Late July
Under the Same Sky will remain on display at the Rizq Art Gallery on Al Reem Island, Abu Dhabi, until July 31. The exhibition provides an essential platform for engaging with contemporary artistic voices, allowing all visitors to appreciate the multifaceted nature of modern Emirati identity.
