Aya Safieddine Launches Archif to Strengthen Lebanon’s Fashion Heritage Through Pre-Loved Marketplace
Aya Safieddine, a Lebanese native who grew up in Nigeria, ventured into the resale fashion scene after relocating to London for her studies. Observing the thriving secondhand shopping platforms in the UK sparked an idea: to create a similar experience in Lebanon, which she found lacking. The country’s vibrant fashion scene was fragmented, primarily scattered across Instagram, with vintage sellers operating without a central hub. This gap led to the creation of Archif, an online platform that consolidates Lebanon’s vintage sellers into one accessible marketplace.
Revamping Resale in Lebanon
Archif serves not just as a marketplace but as a bridge to the broader creative community in Lebanon. Safieddine emphasizes her personal connection to the concept of resale, focusing on the cultural significance of family hand-me-downs. In the Middle East, clothing passed between generations often holds personal meaning, serving as a vessel for memories and heritage. Safieddine aimed to elevate this tradition by creating a platform where acquiring secondhand fashion also allows for the preservation of Lebanon’s fashion history.
The mission of Archif extended recently to the “Dear Lebanon, With Love” pop-up event in London, aimed at raising $100,000 for families displaced by conflict in Lebanon. The initiative received backing from prominent Lebanese fashion designers, including Georges Hobeika and Andrea Wazen, who contributed vintage pieces to support the cause.
Cultural Heritage Through Fashion
Growing up in Lagos, Nigeria, as part of the Lebanese diaspora, Safieddine returned to Lebanon frequently and noticed a disparity between the thriving resale culture of the UK and Lebanon’s scattered marketplace. Upon exploring the local market, she found that many sellers operated independently on social media, lacking the visibility and cohesion necessary for a collective platform. Reaching out to local curators, she laid the foundation for Archif, intending to unite Lebanon’s stylish vintage shops under one digital roof.
A poignant influence on Safieddine’s vision for Archif was her late grandfather’s wardrobe. Known for his well-tailored suits, his possessions became a reflection of his life’s narratives. The custom-made garments, complete with details like his name and tailor’s information stitched inside the pockets, underscored the emotional weight of clothing as artifacts of memory. The experience of parting with these garments deepened Safieddine’s understanding of clothing’s significance in preserving cultural identity, emphasizing the concept that fashion carries the essence of culture.
Challenging Stigmas Around Secondhand Shopping
The perception of secondhand shopping in the Middle East often diverges from the Western narrative, where sustainability and cost-saving are leading motivations. Safieddine noted that in many Arab cultures, purchasing secondhand items can sometimes elicit feelings of shame or inadequacy. However, she encouraged a different perspective: that passing down clothing is not just a familial practice but a deeply ingrained cultural value.
The phenomenon of family hand-me-downs is relatable for many in Lebanon, with relatives frequently passing their clothes to each other. Safieddine sought to shift the perception of secondhand shopping, framing it as an honorable and culturally rich tradition rather than a last resort.
Through Archif, purchasing a pre-loved garment can symbolize acquiring a piece of someone else’s legacy, juxtaposing both personal and familial histories. Each item listed on the platform comes with an option for the seller to share its story, offering buyers a chance to engage with Lebanon’s fashion narrative meaningfully.
Elevating Secondhand Shopping to Luxury Status
Safieddine aimed to elevate the experience of secondhand shopping through Archif, marketing it as a luxury brand. Recognizing that status is an essential aspect of fashion in the Middle East, she observed the emergence of vintage clothing as a new status symbol. A-list celebrities wearing archival pieces at high-profile events exemplify this shift.
Pop-up events have further amplified Archif’s luxurious image. The inaugural pop-up at Art Haus, a boutique hotel in Beirut, was designed to create an immersive shopping experience that transcended traditional retail. The setting, complete with vintage furniture and vibrant community dynamics, encouraged gatherings where individuals could savor cultural nostalgia while shopping.
Shaping Perceptions in Lebanon’s Fashion Landscape
The impact of Archif has been evident in shifting consumer attitudes towards vintage fashion in Lebanon. Many customers, previously hesitant to purchase secondhand, reported their first acquisitions through Archif. Safieddine noted a genuine interest across generations, demonstrated by older family members visiting pop-ups with their children and sharing their experiences of wearing vintage clothing.
Before the establishment of Archif, Safieddine’s connections in Lebanon were mostly limited to family. However, her endeavor to engage the diaspora and revive cultural ties resonated with many, including those who have never lived in Lebanon. Through Archif, she has fostered a strong network within Lebanese fashion, generating a dialogue around cultural heritage and contemporary fashion.
Financial Outreach Through Fashion
The “Dear Lebanon, With Love” pop-up was launched in response to escalating regional conflicts, prompting Safieddine to act. She realized that traditional donation efforts might not resonate with potential donors. By repackaging support as a fashionable shopping experience, she aimed to reduce donation fatigue and make philanthropy feel accessible.
From a humble idea, the fundraiser quickly gained momentum, attracting over 40 designers who volunteered to contribute. Safieddine leverages her platform to foster community spirit amid challenges, providing an avenue for the creative industry to mobilize and support each other during trying times.
By creating spaces where Lebanese identity can flourish through fashion, Archif has become a catalyst for change, connecting generations while celebrating the rich cultural tapestry of Lebanon.
