Central Asian Women Artists Strengthen Voices in Venice Biennale Exhibition “Turandot: To the Daughters of the East”
A noteworthy exhibition at this year’s Venice Biennale, titled Turandot: To the Daughters of the East, celebrates the resilience and creativity of women from Central Asia and the broader region. This collateral exhibition is curated by Dr. Ziba Ardelan, founder of the non-profit Parasol Unit, showcasing the works of 11 female artists from Asia and Central Africa. The exhibition runs until November 22, 2026, and aligns thematically with the 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, titled In Minor Keys, which scrutinizes art as a subtle form of resistance.
Reinterpreting Turandot
The title of the exhibition, Turandot, evokes the famed opera by Giacomo Puccini, first staged in 1924. Dr. Ardelan’s approach offers a fresh interpretation of the character, traditionally seen as a cold and distant figure. Instead, she traces the roots of Turandot to a 12th-century Persian poem, in which the character appears as Nasrin Nush, highlighting themes of strength and independence. According to Dr. Ardelan, this modern reimagining resonates with the societal challenges faced by women today.

Dr. Ardelan emphasized that the exhibition’s theme directly reflects the pressing concerns of contemporary women worldwide. She elaborated on the contrasting portrayals of Turandot in Western narratives and the historical context provided by Persian literature. This contrast illustrates enduring differences between Eastern and Western perspectives, which remain relevant.
The exhibition features a diverse array of artists predominantly from Central Asia and the Levant, regions marked by a history of invasions and cultural resilience. The showcased works span multiple artistic disciplines, including installations by Afruz Amighi, Saodat Ismailova, and Nazira Karimi; videos by Tala Madani, Lida Abdul, Daria Kim, and Hera Büyüktaşcıyan; sculptural works by Huma Bhabha and Mona Hatoum; and mixed media creations by Farideh Lashai and Madina Joldybek.
Engaging with Contemporary Issues
Artworks in the exhibition tackle social, political, and historical themes, amplifying narratives of displacement, hardship, and cultural identity. Tala Madani’s three-minute digital animation The Womb stands out for its clever critique of human history through a comedic lens. The piece juxtaposes soft pastel tones with darker themes, illustrating the evolution of violence and conflict.
Hera Büyüktaşcıyan’s work, The Dream of a Falling Star, explores the paradox of displacement and belonging, blending sound and silence to deepen the viewer’s experience. The critical engagement of these artists with global challenges underscores their contribution to the discourse on women’s rights and representation in the arts.
Noteworthy Installations
Afruz Amighi’s installation Opium House Tears (2024) invites reflection on the trauma of Iran’s child soldiers, utilizing Swarovski crystals and Bic pens to create a resonant visual metaphor. Farideh Lashai’s multimedia work, Dear! Dear! How Queer Everything Is Today, incorporates elements of Alice in Wonderland to challenge socio-political narratives in 20th-century Iran, cleverly merging fiction with historical critique.
The exhibition also features Mona Hatoum’s striking installation Hot Spot III (2009), a globe outlined in red neon that symbolizes global conflict zones. This work serves as a stark reminder that the issues of war and unrest transcend geographical boundaries, illuminating the interconnectedness of modern struggles.
A Call to Reflect on Orientalism
Dr. Ardelan remarked on the historical fascination with the “exotic” East during the Enlightenment, suggesting that this legacy complicates contemporary interpretations of Orientalism. She argues for a critical assessment of these narratives within the context of modern art and culture.
The exhibition Turandot: To the Daughters of the East not only celebrates the artistic contributions of women but also serves as a platform to address the broader conversations surrounding gender equality. It continues until October 31 at ACP–Palazzo Franchetti.
