Samar Hejazi’s In Circulation Strengthens Identity Through Fragile Artistry at Aisha Alabbar Gallery

At the Aisha Alabbar Gallery, the works of Palestinian artist Samar Hejazi defy conventional stability, presenting a striking visual narrative in her debut UAE solo exhibition, In Circulation. The exhibition engages with themes of identity and fragility, inviting audiences to explore how personal and collective identities are shaped when the structures that support them are unsettled.

Challenging Traditional Constructs

Hejazi’s creations blur the boundaries between art and reality, employing delicate materials that appear unanchored, yet intensely provoke thought about their inherent instability. Her approach is not merely a visual endeavor; it serves as a means to analyze human experience through the lens of displacement. Hejazi notes that her work poses significant questions regarding existence and connection, particularly for those whose identities are tied to land and memory.

In her textile work—crafted almost entirely without fabric—Hejazi utilizes threads to form structures that rely on connection rather than traditional materials. She reflects, stating the inquiry into whether embroidery can maintain itself without support prompts deeper philosophical exploration: “Can an identity exist without a land? The answer I learnt was: connection. As long as the threads are connected, the motif can exist.”

Exploration of Cultural Heritage

The theme of instability manifests throughout the exhibition, particularly in Hejazi’s piece, Framing the Imaginary. The work features an empty frame with threads extending beyond it, symbolizing how traditional frameworks fail to encapsulate the Palestinian experience. Similarly, in Mawtini, she reinterprets a national anthem, transforming a communal symbol into an art form characterized by fragility and disarray.

Hejazi’s archival pieces further exemplify this narrative shift. By reimagining Palestinian house deeds and floor plans, she shifts away from mere historical documentation towards creating an emotional cartography. This approach layers and fragments documents, echoing the essence of home as seen through a subjective, imaginative lens.

The Process as Narrative

Hejazi’s practice incorporates repetitive labor, such as stitching and printmaking, serving as a reflective space for her to process complex historical narratives through personal, poetic repetition. Each iteration in her work releases new meanings, allowing the narratives to evolve organically.

As the exhibition In Circulation unfolds, Hejazi emphasizes that she hopes visitors will be left with more questions than answers. She believes there are “multiple ways to exist that don’t necessarily fall under the definitions given to us,” highlighting the fluidity of personal identity and the possibilities inherent within it.

Exhibition Details and Context

In Circulation is currently on display at the Aisha Alabbar Gallery in Alserkal Avenue, with the exhibition running until July 15, 2026. Through her intricate and thought-provoking works, Hejazi invites audiences to contemplate the delicate nature of identity and connection, reminding them that identities are navigated not just through physical land but through the networks they maintain.
