Jameel Summer Cinema Accelerates Cultural Engagement with Thought-Provoking Films from June 20 to August 15
The Jameel Arts Centre is hosting its Summer Cinema series, which runs on alternate Saturdays from June 20 to August 15, 2023. This innovative series screens five films designed to provide a cinematic escape without the need for travel. Audiences are invited to engage with thought-provoking narratives that span various genres and themes.
Curated Selection by Notable Figures
The Summer Cinema lineup is curated in partnership with Hind Mezaina, a recognized curator and founder of The Culturist Film Club. The program features diverse themes ranging from speculative science fiction to compelling archival documentaries. Nora Razian, Deputy Director and Head of Exhibitions and Programmes at Art Jameel, commented on the initiative: “The Summer Cinema series offers a simple and successful formula; high-quality auteur cinema on a big screen, gathering a like-minded community who are invited to learn more about the film and participate in post-screening conversations.”
Noteworthy Film Schedule
The series kicked off on June 20 with Damien Hauser’s speculative fiction film, After the End, which explores human existence in a technologically transformed world set in 2093. Following this premiere, on July 4, John Lilly and the Earth Coincidence Control Office, directed by Michael Almereyda and Courtney Stephens, was screened. On July 18, the desktop documentary Afterlives, created by Kevin B. Lee, is slated to be shown.

Intimate and Historical Perspectives
The latter part of the series introduces more personal and historical narratives. Scheduled for August 1, Do You Love Me, a documentary by Lana Daher, will showcase Lebanon’s audiovisual memories, utilizing only archival footage. Mezaina observed that all films selected for the series have been recognized at significant international film festivals, demonstrating a range of storytelling styles from personal to experimental.
Closing Features and Participation Information
The series concludes on August 15 with Youssef Chahine’s classic, The Blazing Sun, which celebrates the centennial of one of the most esteemed directors in Egyptian and Arab cinema. Each evening will run from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM, starting with a short introduction by Mezaina and followed by informal discussions to engage attendees actively.
