Exhibition Explores Dualities of Orange in “Tangerine Dreams” at Ayyam Gallery

Ayyam Gallery in Dubai has opened “Tangerine Dreams,” an exhibition that delves into the psychological and cultural significance of the color orange. This unique show features a variety of artists who interpret the hue in different ways, exploring themes of memory and identity through orange’s multifaceted presence. The exhibition runs until September 18.

The Concept of Orange

Curator Yasmine Al Awa highlights the duality inherent in the color orange, describing it as a balance between warmth and power. The exhibition aims to provide viewers with a tonal exploration where orange serves as both a refuge and a means of reinterpreting perception. This creative endeavor invites visitors to consider how a single color can resonate across cultures and histories.

Artistic Interpretations

The artists in “Tangerine Dreams” use the spectrum’s warmth to address often somber realities. Iraqi-Palestinian artist Sama Alshaibi presents “Gitmo Girl,” part of her broader project “The Bride Wears Orange.” This work challenges viewers to confront the idea of detention and its emotional weight, as Alshaibi’s portrayal contrasts the traditional white wedding dress. The artist explains that, in her piece, a bride clad in tangerine lies submerged in water, her face obscured, symbolizing the struggles faced by political prisoners.

Alshaibi’s use of orange conveys not only the struggles associated with political captivity but also celebrates personal connections to the color, as her mother hails from Jaffa, a region known for its oranges. She states that orange can symbolize revolutionary struggle and life’s cyclical nature.

Poetic Resonance

Accompanying the visual elements, Roisin Kelly’s poem “Oranges” serves as an introspective lyrical counterpart. The poem opens with the lines focusing on the act of selecting fruit, a metaphor for choosing a partner, intertwining the tactile and emotional experiences associated with both love and fruit selection. Kelly’s work adds depth to the exhibition, bridging literary and visual art forms.

Multi-faceted Expressions

Various artists contribute diverse perspectives on the color orange. Syrian multimedia artist Khaled Akil describes the emotional resonance the hue holds for him, describing it as a connection between personal memories and a distant star. He emphasizes that orange can evoke warmth and stir feelings of longing and reflection.

Faisal Samra’s “Performance #36,” exhibited as part of the triptych “Distorted Reality,” further echoes these sentiments, exploring the contrasts inherent in the experiences represented through color.

Engagement with Broader Themes

The exhibition also features works by notable artists such as Tammam Azzam, Thaier Helal, and Mouteea Murad, all of whom utilize various mediums to express their understanding of orange. These interpretations anchor regional issues in a personal and sensory context, shifting the focus from historical narratives to present-day realities.

Through the diverse contributions, “Tangerine Dreams” allows for a coexistence of themes, encouraging audiences to engage with each piece’s warmth and depth.
